What is Meditation?

Meditation is the practice of calming the flucuations of our mind. When our minds are calm, we can see the world around us clearly and are able to respond immediately and appropriately.

At Reston Ki Aikido we practice all three meditation methods of ShinShin Toitsu Do (The Way of MindBody Oneness). These are Ki Breathing, Ki Meditation and Sokushin no gyo.

Ki Breathing

In ki breathing, we use the breath as the focus of our attention. Keeping our mind focused on both the inhale and exhale, we allow the body and mind to naturally relax. In this state we are more deeply connected with the world around us.

Ki Meditation

In ki meditation, we let go of using the breath as the focus of our attention. Instead, we visualize the infinite expansion and contraction of Ki, realizing that we are connected with everything and everyone around us.

Sokushin no Gyo

Sometimes referred to as misogi, in sokushin no gyo we actively work to coordinate our mind, body and speech. We ring a Japanese style bell (suzu) while performing an ancient Japanese chant. We put ourselves fully into each movement, each syllable of the chant, becoming completely present in that moment.
